The Bulgarian animated short film Family Portrait on the Black Earth will be presented at the EU Film Days 2025: A Celebration of European Animation film festival in Tokyo, Japan, on Monday, the Bulgarian Embassy in Japan said in a post on its official Facebook page.
The film is part of the festival's programme in the Emotions and Connections section and will be screened along with seven other short films in a cinema in the Japanese capital.
Bulgaria is presented by two animated short films: The Artist's Daughter and Family Portrait on the Black Earth.
In addition to Tokyo, the two Bulgarian films will be screened in Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Kyoto as part of the festival programme.
The Artist's Daughter by animator and special effects artist Dimitar Dimitrov is the first animated Bulgarian film based on images generated by artificial intelligence.
Family Portrait on the Black Earth (2024) directed by Ivan Popov – Zaeka (The Rabbit) is based on the short story of the same name by Yordanka Beleva and was selected in the film program of the international exhibition EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Japan in May this year.
EU Film Days 2025, featuring a selection of 44 films from 27 EU Member States, including 13 feature films and 31 short films, gives Japanese audiences a chance to discover the creative depth and diversity of European animation.
