Nearly 1,200 participants joined the 5-km run ahead of the 42nd edition of the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon 2025 on Sunday.

The start in Knyaz Alexander I Battenberg Square was given by municipal councilors and members of the board of the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation, Ekaterina Yordanova and Hristo Koparanov, the sports director of the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon Militsa Mircheva, and the founder of 5kmrun, Georgi Stanoilov. The winners were Matey Simeonov (17:43 min) and Yulia Vasileva (20:48 min).

This year, the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon once again supports a charitable cause. Four thousand leva were donated to support the training of Radena Angelova, an alpine ski athlete with Down syndrome from FAFA-Bulgaria. The donation was presented by director Anatoli Iliev and actor Filip Bukov, who is an ambassador of the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon.

A record-breaking number of over 8,000 people from 66 countries will be taking part in the 42nd Sofia Marathon. On Sunday, the races for 10-, 21-, and 42-km events will begin at Knyaz Alexander I Battenberg Square.

The course will remain unchanged this year as well, passing through landmarks of the capital, but the refreshment stations will feature a new, innovative structure.

Once again, Sofia will breathe to the rhythm of the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon 2025 – with music, excitement, and energy along the entire route. For the second consecutive year, the city will turn into a stage with several music spots that will help runners keep their pace, making the marathon a true celebration of sport and movement.
