Bulgarian Tsanko Tsankov, who holds the world record for non-stop 12-hour swim in open pool and is the only Bulgarian to cross-swim the Gibraltar Strait, is preparing for the Santa Catalina-Los Angeles open-water swim marathon on August 27. The Catalina Channel is among the world's seven most dangerous open-water swims.

Tsankov will have to swim nearly 37 km in a straight line in the Pacific Ocean. The long distance, strong unpredictable currents and the cold waters of the Pacific make the swim very difficult and swimmers swim during the night.

Tsankov has been preparing for months with daily five-hourly practices in a pool and in open waters, sometimes during the night in order to recreate the extreme conditions of the swim marathon.
The Santa Catalina-Los Angeles open-water swim marathon dates back from 127 years ago. The world record for Santa Catalina swim marathon is 7 hours, 55 minutes and 16 seconds and was set by Hank Wise in 2018.
