site.btaGovernment Approves BGN 3.9 Mln Investment in Sofia Tech Park to Support Bulgaria’s Discoverer Supercomputer

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved a capital increase of BGN 3,939,900 in Sofia Tech Park, raising the State’s shareholding. The funds, provided from the budget of the Ministry of Innovation and Growth, are earmarked to cover the operational costs of Bulgaria’s high-performance computing system, the Discoverer supercomputer, for the year 2025.  

Located within Sofia Tech Park, Discoverer is the first supercomputer of its kind in Eastern Europe with a performance capacity in the petaflop range. The system underwent upgrades earlier this year to enhance its capabilities.

The financial support will ensure the system’s full-scale operation and maintenance, enabling it to deliver its full potential. The primary purpose of Discoverer is to advance scientific research in Bulgaria, with applications extending to the industrial sector and contributing to the country’s economic competitiveness.

The supercomputer is available for use by both public institutions and private enterprises and is dedicated exclusively to civilian applications.
