European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen said Friday that vaccinating ruminant animals should be considered a measure of last resort, as it may negatively affect meat exports. He was attending the inauguration of the reconstructed M-1 main irrigation canal, part of the Trakiets irrigation system near the village of Konush (Southern Bulgaria).
Hansen noted that Bulgaria’s control measures for isolating infected animals in outbreak areas demonstrate that the situation remains under control, which confirms that vaccination should be used only as a final step.
At the European Commission level, the principle of zoning is applied as vaccination is implemented only where absolutely necessary, allowing some of the regions to maintain their export potential, the Commissioner explained.
Regarding the pox disease among ruminants, Hansen said the European Commission remains in constant contact with the Bulgarian authorities and veterinary services to receive accurate information on which to base its decisions.
Commenting on Bulgaria’s funding under the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), Hansen said all relevant factors were taken into account. He acknowledged that resources are limited but underscored the importance of sound planning to ensure a steady flow of funds to final beneficiaries.
