In 2024, land freight transport in Bulgaria dropped significantly to 26.969 billion tonne-kilometres, down from 33.125 billion in 2023—a decrease of more than 18%. This marks the lowest level for the country since 2019, according to the latest data released by Eurostat on Wednesday.
Across the EU, however, land freight transport saw a slight increase, reaching a total of 1.869 trillion tonne-kilometres in 2024, up from 1.857 trillion in the previous year—a modest 0.6% year-on-year rise.
Poland retained its position as the EU leader in land freight transport with a total of 368 billion tonne-kilometres, accounting for nearly 20% of the EU’s total volume. It was followed by Germany (281 billion or 15%), Spain (272 billion or 15%), France (174 billion or 9%), and Italy (153 billion or 8%). Together, these five countries accounted for 67% of all road freight transport within the EU.
In terms of goods categories transported in 2024, the top 10 remained unchanged from 2023. Food products, beverages, and tobacco continued to dominate with 312 billion tonne-kilometres, followed by grouped goods (various items transported together) at 237 billion. Agricultural, forestry, and fishery products ranked third with 208 billion tonne-kilometres.
