Kaufland Bulgaria will begin introducing all prices in BGN and in EUR, as part of the preparation for the transition to the single European currency. From June 27, 2025 (Friday), the first paper labels with prices in two currencies will appear in the chain stores, the retail chain reported.

Lidl has already introduced lev/euro tags on its shelves.

The gradual replacement of paper labels will continue until July 27, with the aim of all customers to have enough time to get used to the new way to indicate pricing. From June 30 (Monday), electronic labels in the fruits and vegetables and bakery departments will also show prices in both BGN and EUR in all branches of the chain.

From July 28 the weekly brochure of the retailer will also be represented with prices in both BGN and EUR.

In early June, Kaufland took a step towards dual labeling, starting to show the final amount in euro in all its cash receipts. The company has been conducting tests in this direction from the end of 2024 to be fully prepared and sure that the transition will be clear, easy and hassle -free for customers, the message said.

In the beginning of June, a memorandum of cooperation between the Bulgarian National Bank and the Modern Trade Association was signed, which represents  the large retail chains in the country, including Kaufland Bulgaria. The document is of great importance for the implementation of a number of activities regarding the information campaign for the euro and shows the willingness of the state and  businesses to work together in the interest of the users.

The requirement for mandatory prices in BGN and EUR will continue to be in force for 12 months from the date of admission of the euro, according to the National Plan for the introduction of the euro in the Republic of Bulgaria. During the first one month of the introduction of the Unified European Currency in Bulgaria, BGN and EUR will be in circulation at the same time, with both currencies with legal tender status. After the expiration of this one month, BGN will cease to be a legal tender in Bulgaria.

During the first six months from the date of introduction of the euro, banks in Bulgaria and Bulgarian Post EAD will exchange banknotes and coins from BGN in the EUR with no fee, and in the next six months they will be able to impose a fee for this service. In the period after the expiration of one year since the introduction of the euro banks and Bulgarian Posts EAD, at their discretion, will provide the service for the exchange of banknotes and coins from BGN to EUR, and may enter a fee for this service. The Bulgarian National Bank will exchange banknotes and coins from BGN to EUR without fee from the day of the euro acceptance for unlimited time.
