The Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, Dimitar Nedyalkov, and the President of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and Secretary General of the National Union Road Haulers from Romania, Radu Dinescu, agreed that it is necessary to significantly accelerate the procedures for the construction of a third bridge over the Danube River. The topic was in the focus of their talks during the International Transport Forum (ITF) 2025 Summit, which is taking place on May 21 and 22 in Leipzig, Germany, the Transport Ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.
Deputy Transport Minister Nedyalkov pointed out that a second bridge at Ruse - Giurgiu is among the strategic infrastructure projects for both Bulgaria and the European Union. The facility is part of the European policy for military mobility and transport connectivity in the north-south direction. He stressed the readiness of the Bulgarian side to discuss other potential locations along the Danube for the construction of additional bridges, in order to improve cross-border connectivity in the north-south direction.
Within the framework of the working session dedicated to the restoration of transport infrastructure in Ukraine, the Deputy Transport Minister expressed the need for a common European framework to support the country in the reconstruction and restoration of its transport system.
“The war had a serious impact on the transport infrastructure of Ukraine, hindering the movement of goods and people both within the country and across its borders. The restoration of the Ukrainian transport network and its connection to the European one is of key importance for increasing turnover and transport flows in the region, which is also a priority for Bulgaria,” Nedyalkov said.
