The Safina, Formerly Vera Su, Sails Off from Varna

The Safina, formerly the Vera Su, sailed off from Varna on Saturday, according to marine traffic websites. The ship is currently sailing under the flag of the Comoros.

The Panamanian-flagged general cargo ship was stranded off the Northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast in 2021. The ship was carrying 3,000 tonnes of urea when it veered off course and ran aground on September 20, 2021. The vessel breached her hull on the rocks and partially sank. The salvage operation took 36 days and was completed on October 26, 2021.

Bulgaria paid BGN 2.8 million for the operation to retrieve the Vera Su. The state put the vessel up for sale to cover the costs of rescuing the crew and preventing an environmental disaster in the Black Sea. The ship was sold for a little over BGN 600,000 to a foreign company in December 2022.
