site.btaConsumer Watchdog: Lower Inflation Needs Debate, Increased Local Food Production
Bogomil Nikolov, executive director of the Aktivni Potrebiteli [Active Consumers] Association, said in BTA's National Press Club on Tuesday that reducing inflation requires from the government to engage in a pragmatic debate. Nikolov suggested that inflation cannot be tackled just like that, as such a task entails systematic and sustainable policies that are free of campaigning.
The expert predicted: "The portion of inflation that was 'imported' into the country will start to decline. The reasons are rising bank interest rates and falling fuel prices".
He blamed the shortage of domestic goods for the Bulgarian addition to inflation. "We see that insufficient food production has forced us to buy Polish and French tomatoes and potatoes. If you want cheap cucumbers, it is best to grow them yourself - how can you ask low prices from resellers," Nikolov said.
