Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov said on Tuesday that construction of new units at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant is one of the government's most important projects, not only for this decade, but for the next as well. He spoke to journalists after an agreement for engineering and consulting services was signed between Kozloduy NPP-New Builds PLC and the LEP-BWXT-CNPSA consortium.

"Today we are attending an extremely important ceremony. Undoubtedly, the most important contract to be signed by Kozloduy NPP – New Builds next year is the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) contract, but the second most important one is the contract covering investor oversight, which was signed today," he said. According to him, Tuesday's contract signing is a new step towards achieving the ultimate goal of building Units 7 and 8 of the Kozloduy NPP.

The consortium of leading international companies, predominantly Canadian, will assist the Bulgarian side in exercising investor oversight and monitoring processes related to the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the new nuclear facilities at the Kozloduy NPP site, including initial engineering activities, according to the Ministry of Energy. "On the one hand, the agreement relates to the construction of the most significant investments. On the other hand, we must ensure that it will also help Bulgarian businesses acquire know-how," said Stankov.

He highlighted the partnership established with Ontario's Minister of Energy and Mines, Stephen Lecce, and thanked him for the opportunity to share Canada's experience of small modular reactors with Bulgarian companies.
