Speaking at the high-level conference “Bulgaria on the Doorstep of the Eurozone” in Sofia on Tuesday, European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis said that Bulgaria was joining the euro area in a complex geopolitical environment, where the world was becoming increasingly fragmented and conflict-ridden. In this context, he noted, it was all the more important for the country to be part of a larger and more stable geopolitical bloc. The forum, held at the Boyana Residence, is part of the national communication campaign for Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro on January 1, 2026, organized by the Ministry of Finance and the Bulgarian National Bank.

Dombrovskis emphasized that joining the euro area was not merely about becoming part of a monetary union or changing coins and banknotes, but about joining the very heart of the European Union.

He said that euro area membership enhanced countries’ resilience, including through reducing sovereign debt costs. He cited the Baltic states as an example, noting that after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, their borrowing costs had remained lower than those of Poland and Hungary. This effect, he said, reflected investors’ trust in the euro as a stabilizing factor.

The Commissioner added that in all countries acceding to the euro area, debt servicing costs tended to decline because investors viewed entry into the monetary union as a positive signal of stability and sound financial governance. In this sense, the euro could further strengthen Bulgaria’s economic resilience, he observed.

He reiterated his call for Bulgaria to continue pursuing a prudent and stable fiscal policy.
