Bulgaria welcomes the decision of the UNESCO Executive Board to nominate Egypt's Prof. Khaled El-Enany for UNESCO Director-General, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on its website on Monday. He was nominated at the 222nd session of the Executive Board on October 6.

Prof. Khaled El-Enany is an internationally renowned scientist who has held many positions of responsibility, including Director of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt, and UN Special Ambassador for Cultural Tourism, the statement added.

In April 2025, Bulgaria officially declared its support for Prof. El-Enany's nomination for Director-General of UNESCO for the 2025-2029 period. Bulgaria will confirm its support during the upcoming UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand on November 6, where the member states will vote on the nomination.
