The short film The Wolf bu Bulgarian animator Theodore Ushev has won the Grand Jury Award at the Edmonton International Film Festival, Ushev announced on his Facebook page Sunday. "A year after its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and participation in the most important short film festivals around the world, The Wolf won its first award. And it was at a festival that qualifies it for the Oscars," the post reads.
The Wolf is based on Bulgarian writer Emilian Stanev's short story Wolf Nights.
Two of Ushev's films have been nominated for an Oscar so far. On January 24, 2017, the short animated film Blind Vaysha, based on the story of the same name by writer Georgi Gospodinov, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. In 2019, Ushev's film The Physics of Sorrow was shortlisted for the Oscars. Out of 92 films in the preliminary selection, 10 were chosen, one of which was The Physics of Sorrow, based on the novel of the same name by Georgi Gospodinov.
Theodore Ushev was born in Kyustendil (South-western Bulgaria) in 1968. He graduated with a degree in poster design from the National Academy of Art in Sofia in 1994. Since 1999, he has lived in Montreal, Canada, where he has developed as a multidisciplinary artist, working in the fields of animated film, video installation, painting, illustration and feature films. His animated films have won more than 250 awards worldwide.
