The European Language Data Space and the Institute for Bulgarian Language at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) are organizing a seminar dedicated to the role of language data in the development of language technologies and tools based on artificial intelligence (AI), BAS said. As part of the seminar, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) will share its experience in digitizing its archives.

The event will take place at the Academy’s main building on Wednesday and will bring together experts from academia, technology companies, and public administration. Participants will discuss the importance of language data for fostering innovation and developing AI solutions focused on the Bulgarian language.

Among the speakers will be Svoboda Todorova, project manager under the Recovery and Resilience Plan at BTA. She will take part in a panel discussion titled Creating and Managing Language Data at the Bulgarian News Agency: Archives, Digitization, Accessibility, and an AI-Driven Future.

Todorova will present BTA’s efforts to digitize and modernize the management of its text and photo archives, which include more than 5 million pages and 1.8 million photographs. She will highlight the need for a unified infrastructure, standardized metadata, and public access to information, as well as the role of artificial intelligence in automatic annotation, semantic search, and the creation of language corpora.

BTA also plans to partner with the National AI Team to support the implementation of AI technologies for preserving and intelligently utilizing the archives, Todorova said.

During the event, the European Language Data Space will also be presented. The platform aims to collect, create, share, and enable the reuse of multilingual and multimodal language data. The seminar will also address the challenges of creating, managing, and distributing such data in Bulgaria, BAS noted.
