The production of Medea of Bulgaria's National Theatre has won the grand prize at the Skupi Festival in Skopje, the company said.
The production, based on Euripides’ tragedy and created by the world-renowned duo Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, was the winner at the 19th edition of the festival, which brings together theater actors in Skopje, North Macedonia.
The festival jury recognized the production as a “powerful and complete theatrical work, distinguished by the outstanding performance of lead actress Radina Kardzhilova, who brings the theme of Medea to life in a modern and emotionally gripping way.”
“We are grateful for the dozens of warm responses and heartfelt words shared on social media by audiences and festival guests. We are happy that Medea resonates not only with Bulgarian but also with Macedonian audiences. We believe the production will soon move and inspire international audiences as well, with invitations already extended for guest performances,” the National Theatre team commented.
The festival brought another distinction for director Vasil Vasilev, who was recognized for his production of Don Juan by Moliere, staged at the National Theatre in Nis. Bulgarian audiences already had the chance to see the play when it was performed in Bulgaria at the “Stage Without Borders” festival. The festival highlighted the work of Bulgarian directors in neighboring countries.
