Bulgaria will increase its contribution to the budget of the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat as it moved from the lowest contribution category E to category D, the Cabinet decided on Wednesday.

Bulgaria has not changed its contribution category since the establishment of the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat in 2004. Of all 29 Consultative Parties to the Antarctic Treaty, only Bulgaria and Peru were in the lowest category.

Bulgaria's National Antarctic Programme has expanded significantly in recent years, featuring a growing number of scientific projects and initiatives, such as the opening of a new laboratory at the St Kliment Ohridski Bulgarian Antarctic Base on Livingston Island and the participation of the naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii, which has made three successful voyages to Antarctica and back.
