Once again, the mountain town of Kalofer will welcome visitors and lace enthusiasts for the annual Festival of Kalofer Lace, a vibrant celebration of craftsmanship, tradition, and artistic heritage. The event, held in mid-August, honors the delicate bobbin lace that has become a symbol of the town’s cultural identity. The festivities begin on August 15, coinciding with the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, according to a programme posted on Facebook by the Town Hall.

A festive liturgy will take place at the Church of the Holy Virgin and the Hristo Botev Memorial Complex. Later, a blessing ceremony and official opening of the festival will take place in front of the Creative Center for Kalofer Lace, marking the beginning of a rich program of exhibitions, demonstrations, and community events.

Visitors will be treated to a variety of themed exhibitions, each showcasing different aspects of the Kalofer lace tradition. “The Thread of Eternity – The Art of the Lace Maker” is a special exhibition featuring the exquisite lacework of Lalka Shopova, part of the "Golden Fund" collection of the Creative Center. “Lace Whispers” is a photo exhibition that follows the journey of young lace-making students through their training, travels, and public appearances. “White Magic” is a thematic exhibition hosted by the Hristo Botev National Museum in Kalofer, focusing on the historical and cultural significance of lace in Bulgarian heritage. “Where Bobbins Dance and Threads Tell Stories: Small Hands, Great Art” is an exhibition of lace made by children in the local lace-making circle.

Throughout the festival, guests can witness live lace-making demonstrations at the Creative Center. Both master lace makers and students from the local lace-making circle will showcase their skills, inviting visitors to experience the intricate techniques up close.

Additionally, a local artisan market will run from August 15 to 17, starting at 10:00 a.m. daily, where visitors can purchase handmade lace items and other regional products crafted by local producers.

On August 16, Kalofer and nearby Karlovo will host the 21st World Lace Congress and General Assembly of the International Bobbin and Needle Lace Organization (OIDFA). It is the first time the organization is holding this annual event in Bulgaria.

All events in the cultural program in Kalofer are free to attend, thanks to the financial support of the National Culture Fund and the partnership of the Kalofer Town Hall and the Hristo Botev – 1869 Community Center. Access to the exhibitions and all events in Karlovo is also free of charge, made possible by the support of the Culture Ministry and the Vasil Levski – 1861 Community Center.
