This year’s Sofia travelling edition of the 6Fest Street Arts Festival features carnival parades, large puppets, puppet theatre, and circus performances, according to the organizers.

The festival opened on July 30 in the North Park. A second park series event is scheduled for August 8 in the South Park. The park programme includes a daytime parade and an illuminated show featuring three of its large carnival puppets, along with a workshop on street and carnival arts aimed at children and youth.

“Don’t miss the chance to see the whimsical glowing figures of 6Fest, nearly 4 meters tall, as if they came from another world. The parade of carnival puppets is a true spectacle for the senses, and festival guests are welcome to participate in carnival costumes and take photos with the puppets and actors. The workshops will offer participants the opportunity to learn more about theatrical art and various street and carnival art forms,” the organizers said.

On August 9, the festival programme continues with a new circus performance, The Queen, by the Metamorphosis Theater. The group specializes in non-verbal theatre, pantomime, street and circus art, and dance theatre. Their work is closely connected to medical clowning, which is why the founders of the troupe, Yanita Kirova and Iva Lapatova, have received awards and nominations for their contributions to social initiatives.

Also on August 9, for the first time in Sofia, two of the large puppets from Puppets Occupy Street, a production by the Colibri theatre from Romania, will be featured. These puppets are well-known for their participation in the annual parade of the international Puppets Occupy Street festival in Craiova. An interesting fact is that although these marionettes are controlled with strings, due to their 4.5-m height, they are operated via a special mobile construction.

The festival program continues from August 21 to 24. From Blagoevgrad, the Gestus theatre will present the puppet show Thumbelina, based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The youngest audience members will enjoy an engaging and adventurous story about swamp spirits, elves, and frogs, but most of all, about the search for true love, from which wings quite literally grow on one’s back.

A highlight of the festival is its focus on carnival parades, where theatrical improvisation, audience interaction, and even participation by spectators in the art itself play a key role. On August 22, 6Fest will present the parade of illuminated carnival puppets, entitled Fairy Tale Creatures. The dragon, bird, and fish puppets incorporate Bulgarian folklore motifs, and the word “6Fest” on the dragon is written in Glagolitic script.

Another carnival parade is scheduled for August 23, this time featuring stilt performers, mascots, and costumed artists.

On August 24, the Carnival with 6Fest in the Park series continues with an event in Geo Milev Park. The final event in this series will take place in the West Park on September 10.

6Fest has received the EFFE Label 2024-2025 from the European Festivals Association. The EFFE label is awarded by an international jury and is the European quality mark for remarkable art festivals that demonstrate commitment to art, local community participation and international activity.
