A screening of the film Treasures of Bulgaria: Land of Roses by Prof. Bettany Hughes will be one of the highlights of Tuesday’s programme of the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held under the presidency of Bulgaria in Paris. The screening is organized by the Tourism Ministry.
The film is part of the acclaimed Treasures of the World series, hosted by Bethany Hughes, whose films are broadcast in over 120 countries and reach an audience of more than two billion viewers.
As part of the session, the results of the expert meeting held on the Isle of Vilm, Germany, from November 26 to 28, 2024, will be presented later in the day.
Taking place at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the event is themed World Heritage. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and is jointly organized by UNESCO and the Ministry of Environment and Water.
The agenda includes discussions on capacity-building activities related to World Heritage and a review of progress under the World Heritage Capacity Building Strategy. A report will also be presented on the work of UNESCO Category II Centres in implementing the World Heritage Convention. The day’s final session will focus on the state of conservation of World Heritage sites, including those classified as World Heritage in Danger, according to the organizers.
The 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee opened on Monday and will run until July 16 at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris. As part of the session, Bulgaria will present elements of its cultural and natural heritage. During this year’s session, the Committee will consider proposals for 30 new sites to be inscribed and the extension of two already on the list, as well as review the state of conservation for 248 existing World Heritage Sites.
UNESCO was founded on November 16, 1945. Bulgaria became a member on May 17, 1956, the same year its National Commission for UNESCO was established. The Commission coordinates activities between Bulgarian institutions and UNESCO.
UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee is one of the two governing bodies responsible for implementing the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. It is composed of representatives from 21 countries elected from among the 196 States Parties to the Convention.
