British theatre director Declan Donnellan’s work on ancient tragedies will be presented at the Varna Summer International Theatre Festival on Tuesday.
The audience will see Medea by the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, with Radina Kardzhilova in the main role. Immediately afterwards, for the first time in Varna, the play Oedipus Rex will be shown, staged by the Marin Sorescu National Theatre of Craiova. According to Asen Terziev from the festival team, both performances have a similar stage design, in which the audience stands on stage and plays the role of the ancient chorus, while the actors move among the spectators.
Donnellan co-founded the Cheek by Jowl company in London in 1981 together with Nick Ormerod. They have received numerous theatre awards such as the Laurence Olivier Award, the Golden Lion from Venice for lifetime achievement, and the International Stanislavsky Award. Donnellan and Ormerod were awarded the honorary Order of the British Empire. Their landmark productions have been presented in more than 50 countries and have influenced the development of acting, theatrical language and audience perception around the world.
The performance Perfect Strangers by Paolo Genovese at the Sofia Theatre will also be presented at the festival on Tuesday.
