Over 70 sites in Sofia are free to enter on the 21st European Museum Night on Saturday. This year the event in Sofia and Varna is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sofia Municipality, Jordan Petkov Art Foundation, French Institute in Bulgaria and Varna Municipality.

"Museums and galleries in Bulgaria play a central role in smoothing a vibrant, dynamic, accessible cultural tourism and they should not only be custodians of memory but also spaces for interaction, experience and contemporary interpretation of history. In this context, I would like to inform you that the European Museum Night will take place on May 17,  which the Ministry is coordinating at national level and the programme includes thematic exhibitions, concerts, art events and events in 25 regions,“ Culture Minister Marian Bachev said at the first conference on the development of cultural tourism in Bulgaria.

International Museum Day was first celebrated in 1978, with the aim of raising awareness of the role of museums in society. The European Museum Night was first organised in 2005 by the French Ministry of Culture and in just a few years the initiative has successfully spread across Europe. Bulgarian museums and galleries have been involved in its very first edition.
