Denitsa Malcheva, who is finishing secondary school, was named Rose Queen of Kazanlak on Friday after the 58th edition of the beauty contest. The central Bulgarian town is known as the capital of the Rose Valley, which is famous internationally for its rose oil production.

Denitsa and two runners-up were elected from among a record 35 contestants by a seven-member jury chaired by fashion guru Lubomir Stoykov. The election took place during a lavish show in the local Arsenal Culture Centre, held under the motto "Beauty, the Fragrance of the Soul".

The event was attended by Kazanlak Mayor Galina Stoyanova, deputy mayors, Municipal Council members, senior executives of local businesses and institutions, and mayors of nearby settlements.

The contestants paraded before the audience in three rounds dubbed "Elegance and Charm", "The Faith of the Bulgarian Woman", and "Sparkle". The show featured performances by the Shahira Dance Company and the Gratsia Ballet Centre. Loud applause at the end of the show was triggered by the appearance of the 35 contestants to the song "Bangaranga", with which the singer Dara qualified Bulgaria for the final of the ongoing Eurovision Song Contest.

The high point of the 123rd Rose Festival in Kazanlak will come on June 5-7. This year's programme again includes a series of cultural events that will acquaint visitors from around the world with the long-standing tradition of the oil-bearing rose in the area. Among the highlights are a lavish coronation ceremony of the newly elected Rose Queen on June 5, a concert by the singer Ishtar and the group The Gypsies on June 6, and a colourful carnival on the festival's final day, which will pass through the town's central square.

This year, the Kazanlak public will have the opportunity to meet the winners and other participants in the Rose Queen Contest at a special event on the central Sevtopolis Square, which will take place on Sunday, May 17, under the motto "Glimmer in Motion". By tradition, next year the three young women chosen in Friday's contest will serve as ambassadors of Kazanlak and Bulgaria at representative events, tourism exhibitions and fairs around the world.

Kazanlak's rival town, Karlovo, holds its own rose queen contest.
