Fifteen students from three continents have been selected for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) in Sofia, the Education and Science Ministry’s press service said Monday. More than 2,800 applicants worldwide competed for the slots.

The participants, due to arrive in Bulgaria shortly, are students at some of the world’s most prestigious universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Cambridge, ETH Zurich, Seoul National University and others. They include international olympiad medalists, national champions and students who have ranked among thousands of peers in national competitions and contests. They have completed internships at leading companies and have numerous opportunities for professional and research development.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at INSAIT is being held for the fourth consecutive year and has helped the Bulgarian institute establish itself as one of the most popular and sought-after destinations for thousands of top students from around the world, the Ministry said.

The selected participants will work with INSAIT researchers in key areas of artificial intelligence, including machine learning, computer vision, AI for mathematics and natural language processing, as well as in fields such as information security and cryptography, theory and algorithms, among others.
