The moral compass of journalists must not change, said Milen Mitev, Director General of the Bulgarian National Radio, at the opening of a discussion titled Journalists and Media in the Mirror of the Code of Ethics, held at Sofia University.

Mitev noted that the institution is also his alma mater, where he studied law. He pointed out that in law, rules are clearer because violations lead to sanctions, whereas ethics is a philosophical discipline concerned with morality and the principles guiding human behavior.

He explained that ethics can be understood more simply as a study of good and evil, or how each individual perceives them, and while such perceptions may change over time, the moral compass of journalists should remain constant. He encouraged young journalists to maintain a strong internal moral compass, as it often provides more reliable guidance than external advice.

Mitev recalled that in a previous lecture to students at the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, he quoted a line from the film Spider-Man: “With great power comes great responsibility,” emphasizing that journalists must act responsibly. He added that while major traditional media outlets have adopted and follow the code of ethics of Bulgarian media, smaller outlets often have not, which contributes to a negative perception of media as a whole.

Participants in the discussion included the Rector of Sofia University, Georgi Valchev; the Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency, Kiril Valchev; the Director General of the Bulgarian National Television, Milena Milotinova; and the current Chair of the Council for Electronic Media, Gabriela Naplatanova. Faculty members, students, and journalists from various media organizations were also invited to attend.
