Nova Broadcasting Director: European Media Freedom Act Brings Promise and Challenges for Bulgarian Media

The European Media Freedom Act sounds promising, but also very challenging, said Elena Velkova, Director of Law, Compliance, and Human Resources at Nova Broadcasting Group Ltd. She spoke at the opening of a conference titled "The European Media Freedom Act – a Framework for Independence and Pluralism in the European Union", organized by the Council for Electronic Media (CEM) in Sofia.

"Several questions arise, such as whether we will find a unified definition of a media service, whether information on the ultimate owners of media outlets will find its proper place, or whether it will continue to be scattered across different registers," Velkova said.

"We welcome the clear and specific rules proposed by the law and the European Media Freedom Act, but at this pivotal moment in legislation, it is important for us to find a balance – to have a framework without overregulation, and to ensure that editorial independence and media flexibility are not restricted, so that the business can develop in a way that benefits society," Velkova added.

"I hope we will discuss topics such as the protection of journalists and their sources, the procedure for media concentration in the context of pluralism, and the new rules for major online platforms," Velkova emphasized.

She added that these rules could help build a more transparent, fair, and sustainable media environment.
