President Rumen Radev called the statement made by GERB leader Boyko Borissov two days ago at the party headquarters, “a triumph of the abnormality of Bulgarian politics”. President Radev responded to reporter's questions while attending an event at the Monument to Bulgarian Pilots in Sofia on the occasion of the Aviation and the Air Force on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Borissov spoke to members of the GERB-UDF parliamentary group and Prime Minister and GERB member Rosen Zhelyazkov, saying that his party would no longer help ensure a quorum in Parliament, casting doubt on whether GERB would remain part of the governing majority.
“This whole monodrama was a triumph of the abnormality of Bulgarian politics,” Radev said. “We are witnessing Borissov capitulating to Peevski,” Radev added. “This is not being done with the consent of the voters, including GERB supporters, who did not vote for Delyan Peevski's party. They must finally understand that voters are not serfs,” Radev said.
“No one has ever dared treat a Bulgarian prime minister so humiliatingly,” Radev said. The main figure in the parliamentary republic, the Chair of the National Assembly, has also been degraded, he added. “Power does not lie with the institutions but is in the hands of two people who hand it back and forth to one another and this cannot go on,” Radev stated.
“My party, my so-called new political project, is Bulgarian citizens, and I will continue defending their interests with all the means granted to me by the Constitution,” Radev said.
