Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov and Roel Dona, the Secretary General of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), held a working meeting within the framework of the Fourth Forum of the Prosecutors General of the Balkan States in Sofia, the prosecution service said on Tuesday. 

Dona was one of the official guests and lecturers at the forum. He gave a presentation on international cooperation of prosecutors within the framework of IAP.

During his meeting with Sarafov, the IAP Secretary General underscored the important and strategic role played by the Bulgarian prosecution service and its investigative authorities in maintaining stability and security in the Balkan region. He also highlighted the good and active cooperation with the Bulgarian Association of Prosecutors, which is part of the International Association of Prosecutors.

Dona highlighted the need to strengthen the independence of prosecutors worldwide. Similarly to judges, he added, prosecutors in every country should have robust safeguards in place to protect the impartiality of their judgements, as only robust and independent prosecutors can ensure the rule of law.

The sides agreed that exchanging experience and good practices, as well as establishing personal, direct contact between prosecutors in the region, would guarantee more effective and high-quality interaction between law enforcement agencies and improve cooperation between magistrates.
