The opposition knew that the no-confidence motion would fail, BSP-United Left MP Atanas Atanasov said Thursday in Parliament's lobby, after the Cabinet of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov survived a no-confidence vote over "failures in the sectors of internal security and justice, which have deepened the problem of a captured state". The motion was defeated in a 101-133 vote, with no abstentions.
"You cannot bring down a sitting government in 2025 with plagiarized arguments referring to previous administrations, some of which involve parties now in opposition. The public's priorities are different. People want the State to ensure income growth and to control inflation and prices," Atanasov said. He added that the State must guarantee that every person can live and develop with dignity in Bulgaria, and urged the opposition to focus on these key issues, which are also the government's priorities.
Atanasov highlighted the importance of safeguarding funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan, crucial both for the budget and the country's development. He called on Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria and the whole opposition "to concentrate on these topics rather than continuing cheap political theatrics".
The fifth no-confidence motion was submitted on September 12 by Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria and MECh, accusing the Zhelyazkov Cabinet of systematic failures in maintaining public order and security, ensuring justice, and tackling the erosion of state institutions. The motion was co-signed by the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms.
