On Tuesday at the opening of the completely renovated retail area in Terminal 1 of Vasil Levski Airport, Jesus Caballero, the CEO of SOF Connect, Sofia Airport’s operator, said that the company is committed to transforming the capital’s airport into a modern, welcoming, and passenger-oriented gateway to Bulgaria.
According to Caballero, although Terminal 1 will be closed to commercial flights following the commissioning of Terminal 3, investment into improving the passenger experience so that Vasil Levski Airport – Sofia can be among the best regional airports in Europe continues. In addition to the renovated retail area, Terminal 1 has been expanded with two more exits, bringing the total to eight.
The entire renovated space in Terminal 1 covers an area of nearly 1,200 square meters, representing a 50% increase in retail space. This was done in partnership with Avolta, a leading global travel retail and food & beverage operator.
Walter Seib, Avolta’s CEO for Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe, said that despite the planned decommissioning of Terminal 1, its maintenance is necessary due to the growing number of passengers. According to Seib, the new walk-through duty-free shop, along with the two dining areas, one featuring Italian cuisine and one featuring Bulgarian cuisine, contribute to a more convenient and modern airport experience.
