Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) submitted to the National Assembly a motion to initiate a new, lawful, and transparent procedure for electing Anti-Corruption Commission's leadership and terminate the current, compromised one, the party press office announced on Thursday.
“Today we face the question – will we have a truly independent anti-corruption body, or will we allow the ruling majority to cement the status quo?” said CC-DB Deputy Floor Leader Lena Borislavova.
Among the reasons for their motion were major issues with the current procedure such as shortened deadlines for nominations, lack of real public and media oversight, opaque rules, and suspicions of conflicts of interest among members of the Nomination Committee.
CC-DB also commented that the candidates’ proposals for the Commission’s future were vague and without a sharp vision on how to tackle corruption.
Terminating the current procedure and launching a new one that meets European standards for the political independence of the Anti-Corruption Commission is essential to ensure Bulgaria receives the funds under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, which is not guaranteed under the present compromised process, the statement concluded.
