A honey buzzard chick was rescued by local people from a large forest fire near the southern village of Madrets, the WWF Bulgaria conservation organization said on its Facebook page. The chick is receiving care at the Wildfire Rescue Centre of Green Balkans in Stara Zagora (Southeastern Bulgaria).

The Green Balkans team have thus far visited the area of 14 wildfires. Only three animals have been rescued: a tortoise, a honey buzzard chick, and a long-eared owlet.

Hundreds of wild animals lose their lives in forest fires, WWF Bulgaria said. The organization has a fundraiser for the Wildlife Rescue Centre in Stara Zagora to aid its work.

Dr Hristina Klisurova from the Wildlife Rescue Centre told BTA recently that tortoises and small mammals are among the fire victims in Bulgaria.
