At a briefing here on Wednesday, Interior Minister Daniel Mitov said that the Ministry has both firefighting equipment and people. He described as irresponsible comments made in Parliament earlier in the day regarding the equipment available to the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection.
In his words, not only does the Directorate have equipment, but it has more than it has ever had. Some of it is modern equipment. The Ministry of the Interior and the Directorate respond constantly every day to a huge number of calls. On July 9, there were 400 calls, of which over 300 were for fires. When the more problematic fires started a few days ago, there were over 300 reports. The teams dealt with the vast majority of them, Mitov explained.
According to the Minister, firefighting equipment is currently being purchased in accordance with a decision made by the National Assembly last year. "A contract has been signed for the delivery of 120 light-duty fire engines. A contract has also been signed for the delivery of 37 heavy-duty fire engines. A public tender has been held for the delivery of 128 medium-class vehicles. However, this public procurement procedure is currently being appealed. Work on it continues. Procedures for the purchase of firefighting equipment are underway," explained Mitov.
