Bulgaria's Parliament on Wednesday passed conclusively revisions to the Counter-Corruption Act, replacing the majority by which the National Assembly elects the members of the Counter-Corruption Commission (CCC) from two thirds of all MPs or 160 votes to 50% plus one or 121 votes.
According to other amendments, the nomination board formed for the election of CCC members may meet and act by the votes of not fewer than four of its five members. Under the effective version of the law, this board consists of five independent members: one each put forward by the Supreme Court of Cassation, the Supreme Bar Council, the Ministry of Justice, the National Ombudsman, and the Bulgarian National Audit Office.
The draft legislation was tabled by Raya Nazaryan and a group of MPs of GERB-UDF. It will enter into force as from the day the las is gazetted.
Later in the day, at a meeting of the competent parliamentary committee, the lawmakers are expected to endorse the rules of procedure of the nomination board which, under the Counter-Corruption Act, considers reasoned nominations for CCC members and selects the eligible candidates.
