site.btaPES Welcomes Bulgaria’s Green Light to Join Eurozone
The Party of European Socialists welcomes the report from the European Commission and the European Central Bank published on Wednesday, which formally accepted Bulgaria’s bid to join the Eurozone in 2026, reads PES press release. This is a fundamental step in Bulgaria’s integration into the European project as it becomes the 21st EU Member State to adopt the single currency.
“Today marks a new chapter in Bulgarian history as they take the next step in becoming a more integrated part of the European family by formally adopting the Euro from January 2026. By formally adopting the Euro, Bulgaria will participate in the ECB’s decision-making process and have more influence in shaping the future of its citizens on the European stage. This day could not have been possible had it not been for the tireless efforts of our member party, Bulgarian Socialist Party, which firmly supported the Bulgarian integration into the Eurozone,’’ PES President Stefan Lofven said.
The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) adopted its official position that Bulgaria should join the Eurozone at its Congress in 2017 and has defended it since then, despite significant backlash from the far-right and the populists in Bulgaria, the press release adds.
The PES already commended the party and its leader, Atanas Zafirov, who is also Deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria in the current pro-European government, for their valiant efforts to bring this day to fruition and for realizing this long-term commitment.
