In less than a month, Bulgarian pupils won nine medals at prestigious international mathematics competitions – the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad and the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad, the press centre of the Ministry of Education and Science announced on Friday.

Some of the best Bulgarian high school mathematics students returned from Bosnia and Herzegovina on April 30, winning 6 awards at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad, competing with 143 pupils from 23 countries and winning a gold, four silver and a bronze medal, and a third place in the team ranking.

Eleventh-grader George Nikolov from the Paisiy Hilendarski High School of Mathematics (SMG) in Sofia won the gold medal, the silver medals went to twelfth-grader Angel Hristov from the Nikola Obreshkov Profiled Mathematics and Natural Sciences Secondary School in Burgas, tenth-graders Andrey Stefanov and Alexander Bangachev from the First Private High School of Mathematics in Sofia, the twelfth-grader Lazar Todorov from the SMG and nine-grader Alexander Pendov from the Kiril Popov High School of Mathematics in Plovdiv won bronze medals.

The Bulgarian team leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina were Prof. Stanislav Harizanov and Assoc. Prof. Danila Cherkashin.

The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad was held in Pristina with over 220 participants from 55 countries.

The Bulgarian team, represented by Maya Minkova, Adelina Dorovska, Ioana Mladenova and Vanessa Kalinkova, coped excellently with the difficult math tests. Adelina returned with a silver medal, Maya and Vanessa with bronze, and Ioana received an honorary diploma. Bulgaria finished in 14th place in the European ranking, and 23rd in the world ranking. The team leaders were Lyuba Konova and Violeta Licheva.
