Festivals drive development across entire regions and give national visibility, Deputy Tourism Minister Pavlin Petrov said at a news conference in Bansko on Friday. His remarks came shortly before the start of the 28th Bansko Jazz Festival.

Bansko serves as a strong example of how a place gains popularity by offering a wide range of sporting events and a rich cultural calendar, Petrov pointed out. He also highlighted Bansko's unique local flavour, “Unique Bansko”, and noted that while natural features play a role in tourism growth, events are essential to showcase them.

Over the past 30 years, Bansko has established itself as a year-round resort attracting tourists from around the world, Petrov added, noting that this success is due to the packed schedule of sporting and cultural events and the authenticity of Bansko, which, he said, “opens its heart to every visitor”.

Festivals benefit not only the municipality but also promote development across entire regions and enhance Bulgaria’s overall reputation, as demonstrated by the festival in Bansko, Petrov added.

The jazz festival has become a tradition and blends naturally with the atmosphere of Bansko, Bansko Mayor Stoycho Banenski said at the press conference. “In winter, we host a World Cup, and in summer, a world-class jazz festival,” Banenski added. He also pointed out that organizing an event of this scale demands significant effort, resources, and determination.

The festival was founded about three decades ago by Dr. Emil Iliev. Banenski explained that its continued success is driven by dedication, passion, and a clear vision, which is evident today. He noted that the festival enhances and expands its program each year, becoming increasingly impressive and valuable.

Banenski thanked everyone involved in organizing and staging the festival, including business partners, cultural institutions, sponsors, and hoteliers. He also acknowledged the support of the ministries of culture and tourism.

People are the key to Bansko and to any event, whether as hosts, organizers, or supporters, according to Iliana Shtereva, President of the Festivals in Bulgaria Association. The world jazz scene arrives in Bansko and feels at home, she added.

This edition is expected to be the largest so far, featuring ten days of music, three main stages, three jazz zones, and renowned performers from Bulgaria and abroad. The programme begins each day with performances by children from Bulgarian music schools, followed by a stage dedicated to young talent, and afternoon “jazz points” at three locations. The Jazz Academy will be held for the fifth consecutive year.

For the first time, a “world stage” will be organized in Bansko’s municipal park, where audiences can enjoy international artists presenting new projects and unique sounds each evening. The main stage in the central square will host evening concerts.

A rich accompanying programme is also planned, including two photography exhibitions, an exhibition of paintings by Vasil Vasilev – Zueka, and meetings with Bulgarian authors.

The festival opens on Friday evening with the All Stars Big Band and the John Beasley Trio.
