Bulgarian society is once again witnessing a series of false statements about the sale of the Lukoil Neftohim Burgas oil refinery, enterprise workers' union said in a statement on Tuesday. They are of the opinion that their profession is being defamed by the lack of competent assessment of the impact and consequences for those working in the sector and for the country if the EU ban exemption for Russian oil is withdrawn.
"The Russian oil processing derogation and the share of the country's oil and petroleum product reserves in storage have become a bargaining chip in the pursuit of partisan and corporate interests. The above poses a significant risk of loss of jobs and employment security for Bulgarian oil refinery workers," the union wrote in its statement.
They add that workers in the sector will defend their right to practice their profession.
After a closed meeting on Monday, the organisation told journalists that the Burgas oil refinery employs about 5,000 people, and if the refinery stops working, all will be out of employment.
Pavlin Vakovski, head of the trade union of oil refinery workers, says that recent events regarding the derogation of Lukoil Neftohim Burgas resemble racketeering against workers' employer and pose risk to their jobs. According to the union, renouncing the derogation of Russian oil processing at the Burgas refinery would result in fuel price increase and higher inflation.
