President Rumen Radev conferred State awards on Secretary General of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Zurab Pololikashvili and Prof. Alessandra Priante, Director of the Europe Department of the organization, at a ceremony in the Coat of Arms Hall at the President’s administration building here on Wednesday.

“The awards are a well-deserved recognition and gratitude to our guests,” the Bulgarian head of State said. “I can confidently announce and name Zurab Pololikashvili and Prof. Alessandra Priante as sincere friends of Bulgaria and ardent supporters of the increasingly active role our country plays in setting the agenda of international tourism, as well as to share our satisfaction with the important place Bulgaria occupies - both as a contributor in the field of international cooperation and as a reliable and increasingly valuable member of your organization,” he added.

Radev pointed out that in spite of the difficult past years, which had a particularly heavy impact on the tourism sector, “today we can note with satisfaction that the sector is recovering quickly and steadily and is taking its leading place in the economic development for the prosperity of Europe and the world.”

The President stressed the role of the UN World Tourism Federation in "today's times of global clashes and contradictions to build bridges between nations, to work for cooperation and understanding, to build peace, stability and security for the sustainable economic development of the world."

He also underlined that thanks to the work of the Tourism Ministry and the tourism industry, and the support of the State, the results in the tourism sector in the country have exceeded the results of the years before the coronavirus pandemic. This, he said, demonstrated professional work and revealed potential for the future.

“We want to support Bulgaria in its efforts to develop tourism because this is the fastest way to create jobs, especially in the field of rural tourism where the potential is huge,” said Pololikashvili.

Zurab Pololikashvili was awarded the Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius, 1st Class, for his great services to the promotion of Bulgarian cultural and historical heritage and culture. He has been the Secretary General of UNWTO since 2018.

Prof. Alessandra Priante was awarded the Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius, 2nd Class, for promoting Bulgarian heritage and culture.
