The caretaker Cabinet on Wednesday approved revisions to the Regulations for Application of the Child Protection Act increasing the amount of financial support for the prevention of the abandonment of children and their reintegration into a family environment. The amendments peg the amount of the financial support and the means test to the poverty line for the respective year, instead of the guaranteed minimum income, as is the case now.

As a result, the maximum total amount of the support would be increased by BGN 258 to BGN 1,008. The support will be provided on up to six occasions annually, up from four now. A lump-sum support for the prevention of abandonment will be available immediately after the relevant order has been issued.

The monthly child-care allowances for children placed with immediate or extended family members or in foster care will be increased as well.
