A 1051-year-old Plane tree near Varna (on the Black Sea) is the big winner of the Tree with Roots 2022- #ClimateOfChange contest, the organizers from the EcoObshtnost Foundation (BEPF) said. For the 13th year in a row, the contest explores people's favourite trees and recounts their stories.

The Varna plane tree, nominated by Maria Stefanova and the children from the Come As You Are club, won the highest number of votes in the online poll (1,593) and the title for 2022.

Located near the Asparuhov Bridge, the plane has existed since the First Bulgarian Empire and is the oldest tree in Varna region. In 1969, it was entered in the Register of Centenarian Trees for Varna Region. In 2006, it was listed with an age of 1,000 years, a height of 15 meters and a girth of 7.7 meters.

The Plane tree will represent Bulgaria in the European Tree of the Year 2023 competition, which starts on February 1. A total of 14 countries will enter the competition with their respective tree-nominees. Online voting will continue throughout the month at www.treeoftheyear.org.

A 250-year-old narrow-leaved ash in southeastern Bulgarian town of Harmanli, nominated by Svetlana Angelova, is the winner in the Centenarian Trees Speak category with 222 votes.

This year's Tree with Roots competition is being held as part of the European initiative Climate of Change (#ClimateOfChange), co-funded by the European Commission under the DEAR (Development Education and Awareness Raising) program. It aims to develop a critical understanding of climate change induced migration as one of the biggest challenges of a globalized world in young Europeans.
