One man died, one woman was injured, and two women are currently missing following a serious accident at the Arsenal weapons plant in Kazanluk on Tuesday morning. The injured woman, 43, has a severe brain injury and was transported to the St. Ivan Rilski hospital in Sofia, said appellate prosecutor Todor Deyanov from the Plovdiv Appellate Prosecutor's Office. He explained that it became clear rescue operations and clearing of debris from the workshop have not yet begun, as there is danger of a secondary explosion.
"Products related to sound and light effects were produced at the workshop where the accident took place. It is not a matter of substances for military purposes, but rather fireworks and rockets," the appellate prosecutor also said. He explained that at this stage it is not possible to say exactly how the explosion happened. The main part of the building is missing, and the site is covered in debris. According to initial information, there was no fire.
District prosecutor Dicho Atanasov said that the probable cause is human error. Briefing was done in the morning, the shift started at 7:40.
An immediate pre-trial proceeding was initiated under the Criminal Code, overseen by the District Prosecutor's Office in Stara Zagora.
Earlier on Tuesday, Mihail Mihov from the press centre of the Stara Zagora Regional Fire and Emergency Safety Office told BTA that a report of the incident was received at 11:07 am. Two fire engines and employees from the fire department were immediately dispatched to the enterprise.
The Labour Inspectorate in the regional city said to BTA that they were informed about an accident in the 112th workshop of the plant.
