The Bulgarian population's life expectancy at birth, calculated for the 2019-2021 period, is 73.6 years, which is a decrease by 1 year compared to the 2018-2020 period, the National Statistical Institute said Friday.

Life expectancy at birth indicates the average expected duration of the life of a newborn under the hypothesis of a constant intensity of the age-specific mortality observed for the respective year.

Different mortality rates among males and females, as well as among urban and rural populations, resulted in differences in the life expectancy at birth for these population categories.

Life expectancy at birth for the male population is 70.1 years, while for females it is 77.4 years. Compared to 2011, last year the life expectancy at birth decreased for males by 0.3 years, while for females it remained unchanged. Life expectancy of the urban population is by 2.4 years higher than that of the rural population (74.3 years compared to 71.9 years).

Compared to 2011, last year a decrease was observed by 0.3 years for the urban population and by 0.1 years for the rural population.

Life expectancy at birth varies from 70.5 years in Vidin Region to 75.5 years in Kardzhali Region. Life expectancy in seven regions is higher than the country’s average. Women live longer than men in all regions of Bulgaria, but the biggest sex-based difference is observed in Lovech Region (8.4 years) and the smallest, in Kardzhali Region (5.7 year).

Life expectancy at the age of 65 is 15.2 years, down by 0.3 years last year compared to 2011. The respective values for males and females are 13.0 and 17.1 years.
