One case of Q fever was registered in Sofia Region over the past week, the Regional Health Inspectorate said on its official website on Wednesday.

Q fever is a serious zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. People usually contract it by breathing in contaminated dust or droplets from infected animals (cattle, sheep, goats) or their birth products, urine, and milk. Many infections are mild or asymptomatic, but it can lead to acute flu-like symptoms or severe, life-threatening chronic conditions.

The health inspectorate also reported one case of hepatitis A.
