The Council of Ministers Thursday adopted a decision on the opening of a Permanent Mission of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, France.

The setting up of an overseas representation in its own right will enhance the positioning and visibility of Bulgaria at the organization, ensuring the country the political weight and influence it needs for the protection of national priorities across the broad spectrum of UNESCO's activities. This will make it possible to pay attention to the conservation of Bulgaria's tangible and intangible cultural heritage, the preservation of historic memory and the symbols of national identity, as well as direct sharing in the processes of making decisions of importance for UNESCO and Bulgaria.

The decision creates conditions for enhanced institutional presence of this country within the framework of the organization, including participation in the decision-making processes, implementation of international initiatives, and assertion of Bulgaria's contribution to the conservation of world cultural and natural heritage.

Bulgaria joined UNESCO on May 17, 1956. It was so far represented at the organization by a Permanent Delegation, headed by a permanent representative.
