An exhibition “For the Freedom of a People”, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the April 1876 Uprising, opened at the National Library on Monday. President Iliana Iotova attended the event.
She said the venue is symbolic and that it would be difficult to find a more suitable space for such an exhibition. Iotova stressed that over the past 150 years, regardless of historical interpretations, a “reserved place” for the events of 1876 has always remained in the Bulgarian consciousness.
The President described the April Uprising as the culmination of the processes of the Bulgarian National Revival and an expression of the growing public awareness and aspiration for statehood. According to her, if it had not been for the “Golgotha” of the uprising, Bulgaria might have reached its freedom by a different path and at a different historical moment.
In conclusion, she emphasized the need for more such initiatives that not only inform but also have an emotional impact, prompting a deeper understanding of history. “There are many lessons we could learn,” the President added.
The exhibition features more than 130 documents from the collections of the National Library and the State Archives Agency.
