Thirty new cases of measles were reported in this country between April 6 and 12, according to National Centre of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases data. Since the start of the year, 104 cases have been recorded, compared with just one during the same period last year.

In Bulgaria, measles vaccination is mandatory and must be administered at 13 months of age and in the year the child turns 12. 

Measles is an acute infectious disease characterized by general intoxication, inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, a characteristic skin rash, and frequent complications, according to the website of the Sofia Regional Health Inspectorate. The measles virus is transmitted through the air via talking, exhaling, sneezing, coughing, and crying. Infection occurs through direct contact with an infected person - at a distance of 1-2 metres - in enclosed spaces, public transportation, and schools. The incubation period averages 12 to 14 days.
