Caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, representatives of the Ministry leadership, and members of the Interpol National Central Bureau laid flowers at the monument to fallen police officers here on Saturday on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance for Fallen Law Enforcement Officers.
Addressing the ceremony, Dechev said that the day is dedicated to the memory of law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. “Today, March 7, is the International Day of Remembrance for our colleagues, officers from the interior ministries of more than 100 member countries of the Interpol family. It is a day when we honour the memory of our colleagues who lost their lives while performing their official duties,” he said.
Dechev noted that although different languages are spoken in the organization’s member states, law enforcement officers are united by a common mission – to maintain public order, ensure the rule of law, and combat crime. “This is a noble profession entrusted with the heavy responsibility of preserving public order, guaranteeing the rule of law, and countering crime,” he said.
The Minister emphasized that the work of law enforcement officers involves risks and often requires serious personal sacrifices.“It is a difficult and dangerous task. Unfortunately, sometimes its fulfilment leads to the loss of life, injuries, or trauma that lasts a lifetime, physical or psychological,” he said.
According to him, the example of fallen officers sets a high moral standard for all who serve in the Interior Ministry today. “We are obliged to preserve the memory of our colleagues who gave their lives in the line of duty. We cannot forget them. Their example obliges us and reminds us that sometimes the public interest must be placed above personal interest” Dechev said.
As part of the initiative, district police departments across the country began their workday with a minute of silence and activated police lights in memory of colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The Interpol campaign is marked worldwide, with numerous iconic buildings and landmarks illuminated in blue as part of the Blue Light initiative. These include the Colosseum in Rome, the Grand Place in Brussels, the Prince’s Palace in Monaco, the Egyptian pyramids, and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. The blue illumination symbolizes the solidarity of the global law enforcement community and honours officers who died while performing their duty.
