Citizens gathered on Tuesday for a protest outside the National Assembly building in Sofia, voicing opposition to Bulgaria participation in the Peace Council under the patronage of the United States. The protest was registered with Sofia Municipality and was organized on Facebook by the Solidarity with Palestine informal group. Police presence in the area was increased.

Some of the protesters submitted an open letter to the parliamentary registry, bearing more than 770 signatures. They are calling for the immediate termination of actions aimed at legitimizing the Board of Peace on behalf of Bulgaria.

According to the protesters, the outgoing government does not have the authority to commit the country to new international structures that are alternative to the United Nations. They argue that accession to the format carries the risk of imposing unsustainable financial obligations on the state budget, amounting to USD 1 billion.

Protesters held placards reading "From Minneapolis to Gaza, Trump Is a Plague" and "Bulgaria Once Again on the Wrong Side".

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, US President Donald Trump announced the establishment of the Board of Peace, and outgoing Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov signed a document on Bulgaria membership. The document is subject to ratification by the National Assembly of Bulgaria.
