MRF-New Beginning leader Delyan Peevski said in press release on Monday that Bulgaria’s membership in the US-led Board of Peace has no alternative. Peevski criticized the position of the outgoing Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, who called on the National Assembly to postpone the ratification of the country’s membership in the Board, describing it as a confusing and negative signal to the country’s international partners.
On January 22, outgoing Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said that a draft ratification bill would be submitted to the National Assembly as early as the following week.
In a letter to Zhelyazkov, MRF-New Beginning said it would seek clarification on who is influencing decisions of the Bulgarian government regarding the ratification process. The parliamentary group argued that membership in the Board of Peace represents an opportunity for Bulgaria to take an independent position and contribute to global efforts toward sustainable peace.
It announced that if the ratification is not submitted to the National Assembly by the Council of Ministers, the MRF New-Beginning will submit its own draft resolution to require the government to do so. According to Peevski, this would allow the National Assembly to clearly show which parties and leaders support Bulgaria’s national interest in international decision-making.
